ICD-11, as this writing, is scheduled for release in 2017. Numerous individuals have suggested foregoing ICD-10-CM and going directly to ICD-11, however a “CM” version of ICD-11 would not be ready for several more years. However, unique and underutilized features of SNOMED-CT may make the formation of a ICD-11-CM no longer necessary. A project is forming that will look at a direct migration to ICD-11 from ICD-9-CM taking advantage of the power of SNOMED CT when it is used as the core terminology of electronic health records.
